What is the history of this fuel?

Wood pellets, the origin of the compressed log, were invented in the United States, following the first oil shock. The idea was to compress the sawmill by-products that are sawdust into a concentrated and therefore regular fuel that is easy to transport and store. It was in the mid-80s that the first specialized industrial units were created on the west coast of the United States, a region rich in wood.

And the firewood market in France?

The log is the fuel wood most used by individuals in the hexagon. Its consumption is estimated at 51 million steres per year or 20% of thermal energy.

How are BDCE wood logs made?

They consist of sawdust, 70% hardwood and 30% resinous, untreated. These are compacted in one block, under a pressure of about 300 bar, without glue or binder. This method of manufacture makes it possible to obtain a constant burning time.

Where do the sawdust come from?

Sawdust is a co-product of sawmill activity. Sawmills are equipped to separate all so-called "related" products, which include sawdust. Formerly these sawdust were burned in piles or even left to deteriorate. Today they are valued thanks to the production of logs of compressed wood.

What is the composition of a compressed wood log?

As required by the regulations, the logs contain no chemicals, glues or additives.
BDCE logs are made of sawdust: 70% hardwood and 30% softwood.
The homogeneity of the log is obtained by the high heat compression (300 bar) of sawdust.

Are there chemicals to hold the compressed hive?

No, BDCE logs are 100% natural. The compression of sawdust is carried out hot, this has the effect of reactivating lignin a molecule naturally present in the wood. The latter passes a certain temperature acts as glue and allows to agglomerate the sawdust particles to produce a log.

What is a leafy tree?

Hardwoods are trees that produce well developed grooved leaves (eg Oak, Birch, Beech or Elm), as opposed to conifers or conifers whose leaf shape is reduced to needles.

Sometimes to describe the composition of a log the term hardwood is used. Nevertheless it is general and means that the log can contain various species of which some unsavory for your home. This may justify more competitive rates than the average.

What is the difference between compressed firewood and conventional firewood?

Compressed wood is 2 to 3 times drier than conventional wood.

Similarly, thanks to the high density of a log, the fire resistance is significantly improved.

Other interest, it will burn almost entirely. With less than 2% of ash cleaning the fireplace is done more easily and less often.

There is also a significant decrease in soot deposition in the ducts. However this does not exclude a sweeping.

The compressed wood is more compact, which reduces the storage space by about 4. A pallet of one ton is equivalent to 4/5 steres of classic wood.

Compressed wood is a standard product packaged in cardboard. It is therefore easy to handle. You can store it indoors without leaving any dirt.

Finally, the compressed wood comes from the valorization of co-products of the wood industry. So you do not cut a tree to heat but you recycle wood residues.

Traditional wood

What is a stere (st)?

A stere corresponds to 1 m3 of wood with 1 meter logs. However if you order logs of 33cm you will not have 1m3 of wood but 0.6 / 0.7m3. This can be explained by the fact that logs of 33cm store better than logs of 1 meter.

Upon delivery I feel I do not have the quantity ordered. Have I got myself?

When ordering 1 stere of conventional firewood, the dispenser is based on a quantity of 1 m3 of 1 meter logs. But then, according to the request, he will cut them to the desired size, 50 or 33cm very often. As a result, the logs are better arranged because there are fewer empty spaces between them.

That's why with 1 m3 of logs of 1m, you will have more than 0.75m3 of logs of 0.50m and 0.65m3 approximately logs of 0.33m. So there is theoretically no deception.

How do you recognize a dry wood?

Drying is the most important point in the quality of a wood. The appearance (without bark) and the touch will quickly inform you. Dry wood is generally considered to contain less than 20% moisture. This requires at least a drying time of 6 years.

How to dry wood?

It must on average remain 6 years to dry in the shelter of the rain. If this is not the case, store it at home by ordering it in summer for example. Prefer split wood because it dries faster. Before you burn it, go home and put the meadow of the stove or fireplace, it will be ideal.


DIN + or NF wood pellets: What is the difference?

Dinplus, ENplus and NF Biofuel High Performance have the same references  and finally they only certify that the product complies with the European standard in force.
In this sense a manufacturer that states respect the quality standard EN 14961-2 A1 proposes a priori a product as good a product manufacturer DINplus, ENplus and NF ... (except that no third party will confirm, test in support).

So where are the differences between these 3 brands?
- The differences in quality are more sensitive for so-called standard or industrial quality pellets (A2 or B) .
So if there is little or no difference between Din + and En + or NF High Permornance pellets, you are more likely to have a difference in quality between standard Din and NF BioCombustible pellets.
- the certifying bodies also differ in their methodology (management of analyzes and controls, management of distributors, management of updates ...) without the differences being obvious or in any case, they should not have a real impact for the final consumer (they are more about the manufacturer).
So let's say it all, these certifications are worth it. These are mainly commercial aspects (costs for the manufacturer), marketing (notoriety) and national interests (NF is of French origin, German DIN, European EN) that stand out.

So do not be fooled by a brand  of pellet stoves or boilers  that would recommend this or that certification. If you want to compare 3 products Dinplus, ENplus and NF High Performance, say that these are 3 products of very similar quality a priori.

The calorific value

What is PCI?

The ICP means: Lower Calorific Power.

Overall it is the heat that gives off the combustion. This calorific value depends on the nature of the fuel but also on its water content. The combustion of a badly dried wood mobilizes a large part of its calories to mainly evaporate the water it contains. Therefore, the more moist a wood is, the lower its heating value.

More technically, the PCI is the unit of measurement to be used to calculate the heat of combustion of a combustible material. It can be expressed as Kilojoule per kg (kJ / kg) or Kilowatt per kg (kW / kg).

Many manufacturers talk about PC (Heating Power) without specifying whether it is PCI or PCS (Superior). The latter is indeed always superior but does not correspond to the reality because it takes into account the latent heat of vaporization of the water which in a stove or a chimney is not restored, contrary to a condensing boiler.

That's why the PC shown on for our logs is PCI and not PCS.

Why do compressed logs have a higher heating value than traditional wood?

Mainly because their humidity is very low. A wood of the year contains 40% moisture. After 6 years of drying, a well-seasoned wood still contains 15 to 20% water. A compressed wood is dehydrated before compression, so it contains only about 8% moisture.

To this it is added that at comparable size, a compressed wood log is denser.


How long does a compressed log burn?

It's a bit like asking you what is the consumption of a car without specifying:

  • the displacement - power of your stove,
  • driving speed - opening of the draw,
  • and the kilometer traveled - temperature obtained.

Overall, just as we can say that the consumption of a current car in town is less than 10L / 100km, it can be said that the burning time of a BDCE log in the heating season, with a stove whose nominal power is less than 8 KW, is about 1H.

Can compressed wood be used in all wood stoves?

The logs of compressed wood can be used in all wood stoves, fireplaces (with or without insert), as well as in any type of fireplace open or closed, except against indications specified by the manufacturers.

However, the use of compressed wood requires a slight change in your heating habits:

  • First, the logs contain less moisture and therefore need less air to burn. Too much draft would result in faster combustion. It is therefore advisable when the temperature of the fireplace is reached to reduce the air intake to the minimum to take full advantage of the high heat output of the compressed wood.
  • Another precaution to take concerning the expansion of the log during combustion. Indeed, the combustion will gradually release the log of the internal pressure suffered during its manufacture. The log will therefore slightly expand. So when you put the log in the fireplace, remember to position it well behind the andirons to prevent it from getting too close to the glass during combustion.

Tip: § the logs are easily scored by hand. Also when starting, break the first 2 logs in 2 or 3 pieces, the speed of heating will be improved.

Can I alternate traditional wood and BDCE wood logs in my heater?

Yes, logs of compressed wood have been designed to be used as a replacement for or in addition to traditional firewood.

Are compressed logs more economical than conventional firewood?

It all depends of course on the purchase price of your firewood. In 2012, the average price of a hard and dry kiln of wood (around 1m3) (oak or beech) oscillates around 55 € to 100 € (approximate data according to the regions and dimensions).

The purchase price of compressed wood firstly considers that it is an elaborate product, and must be analyzed keeping in mind its advantages over conventional wood: high calorific value, ease of storage and handling , cleanliness of use, less frequency of recharging, etc.

Lastly, remember that log cutting lengths of 50, 33 or 25 cm increase the price of the stere because of the price of the cut, but especially the smaller footprint of logs cut in a stere (shorter logs, better they are stored in a stere and therefore the stere is expensive).

Can I put several logs of compressed wood at a time in my stove or insert?

No, the logs have been studied for use one by one. One log ensures about 1 hour of combustion. You can, however, add an extra log at the end of the first combustion cycle. This will optimize the performance of your device without the risk of an unusually high temperature rise that could pose a potential hazard.

Note that for professionals it will depend on the size of the oven.


Can BDCE logs be stored outdoors?

It's possible. The logs of compressed wood are packaged in cardboard on pallet, however they are sensitive to the rain and the humidity, it is therefore imperative to store them under a well ventilated shelter, or inside in a non humid room. Also watch out for moisture rising from the ground, use the pallet provided with it to store your packs of compressed wood.

Stored in dry conditions, densified wood can be stored for up to 3 years.
